2020 Menomonee River Area Wild Ones (WO) Programs
Most programs are held on the third Wednesday at 6:30 pm. The indoor programs (February to April and October) will be held at the Lisbon Fire Department, N54 W26455 Lisbon Road (CTH K), Pewaukee, WI 53072.
Yard tours will meet at the tour site unless carpooling or other special arrangements are made.
The meetings are free and open to the public. Please invite guests.
January 15 – Trout in Your Backyard– Presented by Rick Larkin, Habitat Committee Co-chair for Southeast Wisconsin Trout Unlimited. The program will explore stream restoration efforts in southeast Wisconsin’s trout streams and Lake Michigan tributaries. Learn how including native plant reintroduction is a valuable tool in this effort. (At the Menomonee Falls Library)
February 19 – Tree Identification – Learn some basic principles to use in the identification of woody plants in both winter and summer. Member Jeff Kante is currently the state chair for the Society of American Foresters.
March 18 – Canceled Milkweed – Jim Price, active in Friends of the Monarch Trail, will speak on native Wisconsin milkweed species, their ecology and interaction with monarchs and pollinator insects.
April 15 – CanceledTilia, Wisconsin’s First Conservation Dog – Cory Gritzmacher, Restoration Manager, will bring Tilia. Learn about her work at the Mequon Nature Preserve sniffing out wild parsnip and salamander populations. Tilia will demonstrate her skills.
April 18, Saturday 10:00 am – Cancelled Fostering Wisconsin’s Native Bees in Your Garden – Susan Carpenter, UW-Madison Arboretum. This presentation will help you appreciate and support native bees—from bumblebees to tiny solitary specialist species. (At the Mukwonago Library) 511 Division St, Mukwonago, WI 53149
May 20 – Plant Division – Virtual visit to Jan Koel’s yard, and learn how to divide and replant those native perennials that have outgrown their spaces. Participation encouraged. Watch on YouTube https://youtu.be/7fqBmEaUTgM
June – Annual Native Plant Sale @ Johnson’s Nursery. During the month of June, most Wisconsin natives are 40% off for all Wild Ones members regardless of chapter. Johnson’s Nursery donates a portion of the proceeds to the chapter. Thank you Johnson’s!
June 17 – Virtual Tour A walk at Elmbrook Nature Center – Enjoy the beauty of 17 acres of woodland, prairie and ponds. July 15 –Rescheduled for 2021 Connecting with Plants through Stories – What would life have been like 150 years ago? Imagine practical and whimsical stories of things your grandparents learned from their parents. Wayne Pauly, past Dane County Naturalist, will draw us into the world of plants and natural science through stories that are sure to capture your imagination. September –Planned for 2021 Tour of Retzer Nature Center – Janet Barthel, Nature Center Supervisor will take us for a walk on the grounds. October 21– Planned for 2021 Using Citizen Science to Address Invasive Species – Wisconsin First Detector Network (WIFDN) is focused on invasive species. Tools like WIFDN’s invasive species phenology calendar and the Great Lakes Early Detection Network app allow us all to take action.
